While some of the series you mention aren't shown here on BBC (or at least not as far I know), I have seen Benedict C. as Sherlock. And I would venture to guess that Sir Arthur himself would have quite approved of his performance as befitting the character. He projects the fulness of the Holmes character as written far more than the 'elementary, my dear Watson' drollness that it has often been minimized into. If that makes sense at all...

As these series go on longer, it becomes harder to write new crimes so the drama stuff and personal dynamics are used to pad things out.

Makes perfect sense, although the Jeremy Brett version does not fall into the droll character. Not at all.
