Saw A Haunting in Venice today while on my October beach getaway. Wasn’t thinking of catching it because I remain loyal to David Suchet’s version of Hercule Poirot. Kenneth Branagh is just too thin. But going to the movies is a traditional beach activity once you’ve done the ocean.
The film is very loosely based on Agatha Christie’s Halloween Party, which has nothing to do with Venice. But the film works, as does Branagh. I saw it in a large screen setting in a mall theater of 12 such. The movie is made for this kind of venue. Beautifully filmed in a wonderful Venice and a gloomy palazzo. I throughly enjoyed the scares and had that delicious feeling of unreality upon exiting the darkened reality of the theater into the not quite real of a sunny afternoon.
I must admit, it’s been a few years since I entered a movie house. A Haunting in Venice reminded me that is where such films should be seen. And Poirot solves the crimes.
